If you've just spent $3-500 on a new cover, or are getting ready to buy one, because yours is so heavy you can't even lift it, and you wonder why the last one only lasted you 3 years, then read below to understand the basics of spa cover care.

* If you're in the Southern states, a quality UVA/UVB vinyl protectant is mandatory, apply as directed 3-4 times a year. DO NOT use 'Armor-All' brand protectant as it contains petroleum distillates and damages vinyl long-term. A quality saddle soap or cover care conditioner from your local spa store is good, or try the '303' spray.

* If you use Bromine, keep the levels to a MINIMUM, as the gas trapped under the cover will "orange peel" the underside and make it brittle.

* When you shock weekly, it's very important to leave your cover open/off for a jet run cycle (15-20 min.) so expelled gases can escape. This protects the underside of your cover, as well as clears your water for clarity. This also prevents the chemicals from breaking down the vapor barrier, so the foam cores can stay dry. When the vapor barrier is too weak, moisture just starts filling up the foam, causing the cover to be waterlogged and heavy.

* Inspect cover for cuts/pokes through vinyl, breaching the inner plastic vapor barrier. This plastic bag envelopes the foam core, keeping it dry. As soon as a small hole is made, the foam cores are so dry, they will wick in moisture slowly and get heavier and heavier...To fix plastic - get it dry and use good quality clear postal mailing tape to seal it back up. To repair cuts/ holes in vinyl try a vinyl repair kit. . Most cuts can be glued from the back side by adding a small scrap over cut and putting tape on front side, pulling it back into shape. A good vinyl glue can be found at auto parts stores.

* Lastly, you can remove your foam cores (they all zipper out at hinge) and flip them over and put them back in to reverse the 'sag'. This should be done once a year, or twice a year if your tub is 7' or bigger. This is a good time to inspect plastic bagging for holes, cuts fix!

Investing in a good "cover lifter" is important, it will be easier to remove and replace the cover, and protect it from damage.

Abstract
The high morbidity of common colds means that their economic importance is considerable, with colds causing more loss of productivity than any other infection. As no effective prophylaxis is available, this trial was to test the hypothesis that sauna bathing can reduce the incidence of common colds. Twenty-five volunteers were submitted to sauna bathing, with 25 controls abstaining from this or comparable procedures. In both groups the frequency, duration and severity of common colds were recorded for six months. There were significantly fewer episodes of common cold in the sauna group. This was found particularly during the last three months of the study period when the incidence was roughly halved compared to controls. The mean duration and average severity of common colds did not differ significantly between the groups. It is concluded that regular sauna bathing probably reduces the incidence of common colds, but further studies are needed to prove this."

We just returned from the Annual International Dealer Conference for Jacuzzi Hot tubs. We were honored with the Customer Service award. Only dealers with the following qualifications received this award. First, the dealership must have a showroom that is well kept and displays Jacuzzi Hot tubs, service on the spas and to the owners must be done with no unresolved issues, with warranty registration on each spa sold, and the technicians must be certified with training that receives an A on the tests, from the Technical training given by the factory.
Only a select few dealers get this award. We have received this award for many years in a row!
The conference was held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Hotel and all the activities were fabulous!! This was really a great place to meet the other dealers, and learn from Jacuzzi about the new products, and hear what other dealers are doing to improve their businesses. The keynote speaker, gave an inspiring presentation on Customer Service. We also were able to attend classes on financing, and marketing.

Hot Tub Water Care

Taking care of a hot tub is different than caring for a swimming pool. A pool holds thousands of gallons of water in it, a spa has only 300-500 gallons. And unlike a bathtub that you drain after each use, your hot tub keeps the same water for month. Keeping your hot tub clean takes work, but once you learn the basics, most people can perform their spa maintenance in just 10-15 minutes per week. Read below for details on pH balance, alkalinity levels, chlorine and sanitizers, and oxidizers.

Spa Sanitizers - Chlorine, Bromine, Ozone

One of the most important tools in keeping your hot tub clean is using the proper amount of sanitizer. Just like in a pool, sanitizer in a spa (like chlorine) disinfects the water and kills bacteria and microbes that want to live in the water. Since your hot tub is smaller than a pool, you of course use a lower concentration of chlorine in your hot tub. Apart from chlorine, there are also a few other popular spa sanitizing chemicals and systems. Bromine is similar to chlorine but is less harsh on the skin and does not smell as strongly. In fact, the bromine tablets you can put in your spa are made of chlorine and sodium bromide. Most bromine solutions use a floating "brominator" that allows the bromine tablet to slowly dissolve into the water over time. Another popular sanitizer is ozone from an ozonator. An ozonator is a special piece of equipment inside the motor compartment of your hot tub that produces ozone (O3). Ozone is released into the spa water to oxidize and destroy bacteria and other contaminants (viruses, algae, yeast, cologne, sun tan lotion, saliva, urine, etc). Ozone is pretty short lived (it only lasts about 15 minutes before converting back to regular O2 oxygen) and cannot do all the sanitizing work in your spa, so some lighter use of bromine is still required to maintain the health of your water.

Cleaning your Hot Tub - Balancing Your Water

Hot tubs tend to accumulate everything found on people's body, from perspiration to deodorants to soaps and shampoos to body oils and other natural organic materials. Since you don't drain the tub after each use, you have to find a way to keep the water clean and to keep bacteria and other yucky stuff from growing in your warm water. To keep your hot tub water clean, you have to regularly test it, measure the levels of various chemicals, and then add additional chemicals as needed to keep your water healthy. This is called balancing your water. The first item at hand is the pH level. For those of you that have forgotten your high school chemistry, pH measures the acidity of the water by measuring the balance of positive hydrogen ions (H+). A neutral solution has a pH of 7, while lower values are considered acidic and higher values are considered basic. Your goal for your hot tub is to have the pH be in a range just above 7 -- about 7.2 - 7.8. If your water is too acidic, it can corrode your plumbing and damage seals (and your skin!). If the pH is too high, you can get alkaline scaling and build up in your tub and the plumbing equipment. So keep your water within the recommended guidelines. Total Alkalinity (TA) is the other important measure to keep an eye on. Your goal for TA is 80-120 PPM. TA measures the waters ability to resist pH changes by neutralizing acid, acting as a buffer for your spa water. If your TA is high, it is hard to change the pH of your water. This is good if you have your water at the right pH level, not so good if it is not. You can increase your TA by adding Spa Gaurd Total Alkalinity. Always add small amounts of chemicals at a time, then retest. It is tough to remove excess chemicals from your water, but easy to add a little more. You can use products like SpaGaurd PH Increaser and SpaGuard PH Decreaser.

To test your water balance in your spa, you will use little test strips that you buy from your spa supply shop. They look like little strips of plastics with colored squares glued to them. The 3 or 4 squares on them each test for different chemical conditions - alkalinity, pH, sanitizer PPM, and Calcium levels in the water. You swivel the strip around in the water 3 or 4 times, about 6 inches below the surface, then lift the strip up (do NOT shake the water off it) and compare it to the color chart on the container it came it. Match up the color on the strip to the provided color scales to get your readings for pH, TA, etc. If you find your water is not in the balanced levels, then you need to adjust your water with various chemicals.

After you keep your water clean, you need to drain and refill your water every 3-4 months. No one wants to sit in that chemical bath for too long! You also need to clean your filter monthly and replace it annually. A dirty worn-out filter leaves you with dirty worn-out water -- not something you want.

Oxidizer Shock Treatment

The third piece to keeping nice clear water in your spa is to "shock" or oxidize the water regularly. You shock your water by adding a shocker to break down any left over dead organic goodies killed by your sanitizer -- the shocker also breaks down soaps and shampoos and other materials, allowing the filter to get rid of them permanently. Consider shock treatment to be like the big garbage truck for your hot tub -- it breaks down and gets rid of any remaining junk in your hot tub. If the truck doesn't come by to get rid of this garbage, it becomes food for future bacteria and algae and viruses. So even sanitizing your water is not enough -- that kills these organic creatures, but doesn't break them down enough to eliminate them -- that is what the oxidizer shock does. You should shock your water weekly at a minimum or after each use of the tub if you use it more than 2-3 times per week. SpaGaurd Spa Shock Oxidizer and SpaGuard Enhanced Shock will do the trick.

The portal to Sonoma Valley has a new landmark with the July 3 opening of Jacuzzi Family Vineyards Winery, in partnership with the Olive Press.
The separately owned but combined businesses occupy an imposing, 18,000-square-foot Italian stone villa on 190 acres along Highway 121, directly across the road from Cline Cellars. Sonoma residents Fred and Nancy Cline own both wineries, which produce bottlings from separate vineyards, although a Jacuzzi spokesperson said the two labels may share some vineyard sources in the future.Fred Cline is the maternal grandson of Valeriano Jacuzzi, one of the five Italian-American brothers who invented a variety of injector pumps that ultimately led to creation of the famed Jacuzzi spa. With an inheritance from his grandfather, Cline started Cline Cellars in 1982 near the family home in Oakley. He moved his family, which now includes seven children, to Sonoma in 1991. The new winery is modeled on the Jacuzzi family home in the northern Italian city of Casarsa and loosely resembles a medieval monastery, organized around a central courtyard.Cline said he founded the Jacuzzi brand to honor his grandfather and to "continue the family legacy of producing upscale, high-quality products. This winery is the next step in continuing that tribute."
One wing of the winery houses the Olive Press, which lays claim to being "the most highly awarded producer of California extra virgin olive oil." The business was located in Glen Ellen but joined Jacuzzi to share space in the new winery. Managing partner Deborah Rogers oversees the custom pressing operation, consults with growers on growing and harvesting their crops, and is responsible for pressing and blending the company's oils.Rogers is a member of the California Olive Oil Council and is a certified master taster for the University of California-Davis Research Taste Panel. She is partnered with Glen Ellen philanthropist Ed Stolman, perhaps best known for helping launch the Dove ice cream bar.Like Cline Cellars, Jacuzzi Family Vineyards Winery employs "Green String" biodynamic farming practices, which rely on natural products for composting and employ no chemical pesticides or fertilizers. Weed control is provided in part by sheep.The winery's varietals include barbera, pinot noir, sangiovese, merlot, primotivo, giuseppina and sorrelle.
The winery tasting room, at 24724 Arnold Drive, is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.The Olive Press offers a complimentary tasting bar, gourmet gift shop and an on-site pressing facility. It, too, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and private tours are available by appointment
